I AM ABSOLUTELY IN AGREEMENT and it's a good thing I was taking forever to write the private plurk I was gonna make, since now we're all here. If playing him just isn't fun anymore, I don't want to create any sense of obligation, but I love your Dexter and would similarly love to do more stuff with him! And now I guess... state of the character unions and plotting should be a thing? idk if you guys want to hash that out here or on plurk or IM or something, but anything's fine by me.
Here or IM is just fine with me. And I do really enjoy playing him. I've picked up a couple of threads of plot now that I didn't have before, so I feel like I'm actually finding my feet with him at last.
To be more specific, he's volunteered to be a field medic for security, and undergo counter training in his free time. As if he needs it. Hopefully that'll give him some more scope.
The thing with Debra sounds like an awesome start, and I'd be well down for something with Brian. I know 'just anything' isn't very helpful, but as far as handwave things go, we could discuss that too. Dexter spends six or seven hours a day twiddling his thumbs in the medbay? He goes running, too, needs to eat...should probably be going stir crazy by now. Things like that.
I don't really IM much so here would probably work best for me.
Yay for feeling you're getting back on your feet with him. That all sounds excellent.
Current state of the Deb: she is not currently affiliated with any department. She has this weird relationship with Security where she'd sort of like to be on the team because it's the closest thing to being a cop onboard, but (a) she's really bothered by the lack of laws, due process, and a sense of who's ultimately in charge; she believes in the system back home, but there is no system here and she's really conflicted about it, and (b) SEC couldn't do anything for her re: Brian so on a gut emotional level she doesn't really trust them to have her back. Dexter has probably been getting an earful about all of this: her rant in this thread pretty much covers it.
Otherwise, she's been going to the group dinners, making friends with a few people, getting signed up for therapy with Jenna, having a casual thing with Bond*, and warning almost everybody she talks to for more than two minutes about Brian. She goes on runs, and she probably spends a fair bit of free time hassling Dexter (though she studiously avoids medbay since Brian's down there).
* I handwaved that the Bond franchise doesn't exist in the Dexterverse, since Deb wasn't just laughing her ass off in all their interactions. Hope this is okay and not, like, contradicted by book!canon or anything.
Oh my god Dexter would just have to bring a fucking tent and camp out by her bedside to make sure nobody get stabbed in the neck (AGAIN...), it would be beautiful.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD POINT even if it means someone walks in to start their shift, only to find that like half the cots have been stabbed and everyone's hemorrhaging blood and also on fire
Yeah Dexter you get some counter training, you totally scrawny inept lab geek you. In all seriousness, Brian is in medbay all the goddamn time, so there'd ICly be lots of periods of overlap for handwaved stilted barbie-coded conversations and "hey buddy can you hand me that scalpel cool thanks." Maybe in the morgue or something since, you know, their interaction isn't creepy enough by itself. I'm probably going to slap up the month's medbay log soon anyway, so if you're down for playing any of that out I'd be totally game.
And honestly, in terms of the state of the character, Brian hasn't done that much anyway! It's all just medbaying, working out, cooking stuff, simultaneously avoiding and shadowing Deb, and getting caught gently caressing a bonesaw. So same old, same old.
Lots of little handwaved things like that sounds fine, so we can build on them being decent pretend stranger with each other and such. I'd love to throw him at a medbay log to get started with something like that too, yes.
Awesome! When I put it up/if someone else puts it up I can ping you in the inevitable plurk, and we can work out a scenario there? Or right here, depending on the ideas, although I'm passing out in about two minutes so that might have to wait.
Notttt on Plurk. I should see it in the comm, since I read every thing, but I'm not using Plurk any more. Don't even get pings. You can reach me literally any other way, though.

The medbay is the greatest density of people on the run from the law on the whole ship, okay.
